The Ryan Pleasants Scholarship Fund honors the life, service, and legacy of Ryan Pleasants of Walla Walla, Washington, who passed away on January 7, 2024, while on duty with the City of Walla Walla Fire Department.
Ryan, paramedic/engineer #72, dedicated his life to serving his community with courage, professionalism, and compassion. His career began in the Cowlitz County–North Country area as a mountain rescue EMT, where he spent two years responding to emergencies in challenging terrain. He went on to serve 19 years as a firefighter/paramedic with the City of Walla Walla Fire Department, When Ryan was hired by the City of Walla Walla, he was the 72nd hire since they started assigning badge numbers in order, thus earning him badge #72. He earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and community members alike. In his 20th year, Ryan was promoted to Firefighter Engineer, a testament to his dedication, leadership, and expertise. Throughout his career, Ryan displayed unwavering commitment to his work, his department, his fire brothers and sisters, and the community he served. Above all, he held a profound love for his family. Ryan cared about those around him and was known for leaving pennies here and there as a small reminder that he valued those close to him. His strength of character, selfless service, and deep devotion to others continue to inspire everyone who knew him. In honor of Ryan’s unwavering service and sacrifice, this scholarship supports high school seniors and college students pursuing careers in public service, those who aspire to serve their communities with the same heart, integrity, and passion that Ryan embodied throughout his life.
This scholarship supports graduating high school seniors, recent graduates, and students enrolled in college, or an approved training program are eligible to apply. Eligible programs include accredited 2-year colleges, 4-year universities, and approved training or certification programs such as EMT, CNA, nursing, education, and public safety. Funds will be sent directly to the chosen college or program.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered, applicants are expected to:
Be graduating from high school in the current academic year or already enrolled in college or an approved training program.
Plan to enter a public service–related field
Plan to attend an accredited 2-year, 4-year, or certified training program
Live (permanent address) in Walla Walla County or Columbia County
Submit completed application, with essay and transcript by January 31st at 11:59pm.
