Opening Doors to Healthcare Careers with Hands-On Learning:
Horizon's College & Career Readiness Advisors in Action
Through a powerful collaboration between SEATech, ESD 123, Providence, and Eastern Washington University’s Area Health Education Center (AHEC), students from Prescott and College Place participated in Scrubs Camp, an immersive career exploration event designed to introduce them to the diverse world of healthcare.
For Nancy Gutierrez, Horizon’s College & Career Readiness Advisor (CCRA), this event was transformative.
"Before attending Scrubs Camp, I had limited knowledge of the medical field but seeing it firsthand completely changed my perspective. The students were amazed by the various healthcare careers available—especially with the opportunity to job shadow in fields like ultrasound technology, nursing, and more. Thanks to Providence, I was able to share a job shadow QR code with them, which made them even more excited about exploring their future!"
Beyond just learning technical skills, Scrubs Camp also helped students build confidence in their educational and career journeys. One highlight was the interactive medical lab station, where students applied tourniquets, prepared blood samples, and examined them under a microscope. “One student, in particular, received praise for her phlebotomy skills and shared that she hopes to become an RN in the future.” - Nancy Gutierrez
These moments of discovery are what make career readiness so impactful!
For many, career exploration is about more than just information—it’s about taking real steps toward a future they’re passionate about. Whether it’s scheduling a follow-up appointment to complete a college application or discovering a newfound interest in the medical field, our CCRA’s empower students to pursue their dreams with confidence.
